Even as some clubs in the city had cancelled the New Year Eve parties due to the death of the Delhi gangrape victim, pubs, discotheques and restaurants welcomed the New Year enthusiastically. Huge rush of revellers was seen at 'Aerizzona' and 'F-bar' in Sector 9. The policemen were present outside these discotheques to prevent any untoward incident.

Similar was the scene outside discotheques in Sector 26, where also police were present in adequate numbers. The parties started around 9 pm and picked up around 10:30 pm. There was little space for parking. The traffic police had put up barricades at number of places to check drunk driving.

It was an unprecedented rush in Sector 17, where parking lots were full and so were the eating joints. The 'Blue Ice' hosted a party in the afternoon but in the night it lit candles and announced that "we are not celebrating New Year".

All the scheduled celebrations in CITCO hotels and prominent clubs of the city were cancelled. Western Command headquarters in a statement said: "Members of both army officers' institutes in Chandimandir and Chandigarh, over the recent outrage in Delhi and as a mark of respect for the India's braveheart, conveyed their sentiments not to celebrate the New Year function."
