Road mishaps kill 3 in city

Three persons were killed and as many injured in road accidents reported in Chandigarh on Sunday. In the first mishap, which took place on the Sector 16-17 dividing road, two persons were killed after the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a truck.

Police said the victims were identified as Ravi Kant, 35, and Kamlesh Kumar, 32, both residents of Nayagaon who worked as waiters in a Sector 17-based hotel. They had another rider on the bike, their co-worker Naryan Das, 33, and they were going to attend the wedding of a friend. Their bike was hit by a truck carrying contraction material from the upcoming multi-storey parking in Sector 17, and they were crushed under the front wheel.

Police rushed them to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), where Ravi Kant and Kamlesh were declared brought dead, while Naryan is critically injured. Raj Kumar, driver of the truck, was arrested for causing death by negligence, and later released on bail.

Ravi Kant hails from Solan while Kamlesh Kumar was a native of Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh.

In the other accident, Harbhajan Kaur, resident of Phase 9, SAS Nagar, was killed on the Sector 51-52 dividing road, when she and Anu Gupta, a resident of Phase 2, were on their way back home on a Honda Activa that was hit by a rashly driven Hyundai i20 car. Gupta was driving the two-wheeler.

They were rushed to hospital where Harbhajan succumbed to injuries. Both worked at a primary school in Sohana. The car's driver, Gurpreet Singh, was arrested and later released on bail after being booked for causing death by negligence.

A case of rash driving was registered at the Sector-36 police station against Sector 44 resident Harish Kumar, who rammed his scooter into a police vehicle from behind near the Piccaddily Chowk, said the police. Harish was injured and was admitted to the PGIMER.
