Rose Festival begins today

The three-day annual Rose Festival will kick off on Friday. UT administrator Shivraj Patil will inaugurate it at the Rose Garden at 11am.


In all, 825 varieties of rose would be on display, and the theme this year is 'national integration'. Folk dance teams from different states will perform during the festival that would be open from February 21 to 23, 10am to 4pm.

Addressing the media, mayor Harphool Chander Kalyan said, "This year the MC has planned three cultural evenings, every day, 5-7pm - a Hasya Kavi Sammelan (satirists' meet) on February 21, Sham-e-Ghazal (poets' symposium) on February 22 and a musical evening titled 'Old is Gold' on February 23."

The venue, Rose Garden, was set up in 1967 and is spread over 46 acres. There will also be a folk dance competition on February 21, paegents for children and senior citizens on February 21 and 22, and a puppet and magic show on all three days.

Punjabi singer Gippy Grewal will perform at Leisure Valley at 7.30pm on February 22, while Bollywood singer Kailash Kher will perform the same time on February 23. Police have set up special squads to check harassment of women. Around 100 cops would remain on duty.
