Health and Fitness Over the years, a drastic change has entered our lifestyle and odd working hours have further affected it. Earlier, a nine-to-five job meant that one could easily devote his mornings or evenings to health.
But with the long hours and night shifts creeping in, very few have the privilege to follow a morning or evening fitness schedule. But when the question is not only about living a life, but living a healthy life, one has to take out time from one’s busy schedule for workout.
Also, if one is determined and passionate to have a healthy body, the workout is not limited to mornings or evenings. One can enjoy it 24X7, and that too without pumping iron in the gym or travelling distances to attend aerobic classes.
Cycling, walking, skipping or any other activity: wherever, whenever it suits you, sweat it out. Hindustan Times brings you the second part of the fortnightly series on the fitness regimen of people, who come from varied professions and have different working hours.
It was increasing bulge at the age of 42 that motivated me (Justice SP Bangarh (retd)) to look for the fitness regimen that suited my body and timings. Later, during my visit to London in 2007, I chanced upon Runner’s World magazine and marathon running became my passion.
And immediately after returning from London, I started training for marathon and in October, I competed in my first-half-marathon clocking respectable 2 hours and 27 minutes at the age of 55.
Since then marathon running has become part of my life and till date I have competed in 14 marathons, including one full and one dualthon (combination of running and cycling).
My best finish has come at the age of 62, when I took 2 hours 13 minutes to complete a half-marathon recently held in Patiala. So, age is just a number and it’s a mindset.
I realised that fitness has nothing to do with the age and moreover training regimen is not restricted to the timings. Whenever you are free, you can train and sweat it out. At times, I have trained in the night also, after a busy day with official commitments.
Running is inexpensive, natural and can be done alone. So, I picked running over all other fitness programmes. Moreover, Chandigarh has ample space for running and one can run anytime.
Last year I also added cycling to my regimen and now running and cycling has become very much integral part of my life. Now my target is to compete in the half-ironman (2km swimming, 90km cycling and 21km running). Fitness is a way of life for me now. And if it has become a way of life for me, why can’t it be for others.
