A day after HT reported liquor being hoarded by Youth Akali Dal leaders in cars to be distributed on the poll eve, the Election Commission on Tuesday directed the local administration to register a case against the car owners.

One of the cars, Honda Amaze, in which liquor boxes were being loaded and which had a SAD sticker had the Fatehgarh Sahib registration number and belonged to Vipan Kumar, the son of senior Akali leader Harbans Lal.

The pictures in possession of HT show the registration numbers of the cars in which boxes were being loaded.

Harbans Lal, who was a minister in the Capt Amarinder Singh government and had switched over to the SAD last year, said the car belonged to his son, but he could not give a satisfactory reply to the liquor being loaded. Sources said Harbans Lal’s son worked for the Youth Akali Dal.

The police said they were verifying the details of other vehicles in which liquor was being loaded. SSP Gur meet Singh Chauhan said they had registered an FIR against unidentified people under Section 188 of the CrPC as there was a ban on buying excessive liquor during polls. He said they would also verify from the owners of the vehicles why were they buying the excessive liquor.

Similarly, on the EC directions, the excise and taxation department raided the liquor vend on Sirhind Road on Tuesday. Assistant excise and taxation commissioner Magnesh Sethi said they had verified the stock and found that the vend had sold excessive liquor on April 28 in violation of rules.

Sethi said that after finding ir re gularities in the stock, a challan was issued to the liquor contractor. The department also gave it in writing to the police to take appropriate action against the vend for violating the model code of conduct, said Sethi.
