Savita Bhatti (53), the widow of home-grown satirist late Jaspal Bhatti, is the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate for the Lok Sabha seat from Chandigarh. Her name is on the latest list of 20 candidates announced by the party on Saturday. Her husband was killed in a road accident in Nakodar (Punjab) in October 2012.
A known name in the field of culture, she is the second woman candidate in the fray from the city, with Bahujan Samaj Party having announced Jannat Jahan as its nominee.
Bhatti, who is in Amritsar, told HT: "I am contesting to strengthen my husband's fight against corruption. Our work has always mirrored the frustrations of the common man. The party has given me a platform to continue doing that. I feel my husband has blessed this decision."
She may be a fresher in the political arena having joined the AAP only in January, but is not new to politics. She was an important part of her husband's 'mission' to highlight social maladies through political satire. Jaspal was known to have hit at and ridicule politicians through his satires. So, she could well turn out to be a tough candidate to beat due to the connect and recognition she gained with the common man during her work with her husband, producing and acting in satirical television shows like Ulta-Pulta and Flop Show.
