Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday assured that Prime Minister Narender Modi's recent decision to scrap the Planning Commission would not harm the interests of the state. In a press statement issued here, party spokesperson Ganesh Dutt said in the budget speech, the Modi-led BJP government had envisaged a development authority for all hill states, including Himachal Pradesh.

Hailing the decision to replace the plan panel with a 'development body', Dutt said, "The Planning Commission has outlived its utility and is like stale food. Its continuation would not be conducive to the country's economic health."

Blaming the previous Congress government for the slow pace of developmental work, he said for the first time in 1989, the economic loss incurred b the state government was downplayed before the Planning Commission. He said during former Prime Minister and BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee's tenure, several crores of rupees were allocated to the state for development work but the previous UPA government had failed to put them to good use.
