Police on Tuesday questioned four persons, including a mechanic of a leading air conditioner company, in the case of fire in Sector 17 that led to the collapse of National Institute of Electrical and Information Technology (NIELIT) building and death of two firefighters on Sunday.

The statement of head electrician of the AC company, Amarjit Singh, and three officials of the NIELIT were recorded. Amarjit’s statement is crucial because he along with two others reported the fire. Amarjit, along with his mechanics, was changing the AC unit and had told the police that he tried to extinguish the fire but after failing to do so he called the fire department.

Sources in t he UT police said the preliminary inquiry revealed that three electricians were on the job to repair an airconditioner. There were three air-conditioning units in the basement, of which one of the units was to be disconnected and replaced. During the repair, a short circuit took place leading to minor fire. The electricians used fire extinguisher to douse the flames, but when they failed to control it they called the fire department. The mechanics and firefighters thought it to be a minor fire till around 5 pm, but after about two hours blasts took place in the basement.

The police have shot off a letter to the UT fire and emergency department and MC asking how many times they have issued notices of violation of building bylaws and non-compliance of fire-safety norms to the building owner. The fire department, however, said they had never issued notice to the building.
