Security deposits of 14 candidates forfeited

The 16th Lok Sabha election for the lone parliamentary seat of Chandigarh witnessed as many as 14 candidates losing their security deposits of `25,000. A total of 17 candidates had contested the election.

As per the guidelines, if a contestant polls one-sixth or less of the total votes polled, the security deposit is forfeited.

A total of 4,53,455 voters had exercised their franchise and each candidate was required to secure minimum of 75,575 votes.

Jannat Jahan Ul-Haq of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was the prominent face of the election to have forfeited her security deposit. She had secured 15,934 votes.

The other candidates who lost their security deposit are independent candidates Reena Sharma (2,643 votes polled), Shamsher Singh (2,054), Pawan Kumar Sharma (997), Ramesh Chander (743), Ajay Singla (660), Deepak Shukla (613), Amarjit Kaur (397), Jasmer Singh (389), and Surender Kumar (550), CPI’s Kawaljit Singh (1,968), Inqalab Vikas Dal’s Khem Lal Bansal (640), Hindustan Ekta Party’s Dharmender Singh (566), and JDU’s Surinder Bhardwaj (434).

10 candidates fail to reach four-figure vote mark

A total of 10 candidates had to contend with votes less than 1,000. Jashmer topped the list of candidates who secured least number of votes. He could only manage 389 votes followed by Amarjit with 397 votes, whereas Surinder got only 434 votes.
