French artiste Serge de Laubier, on his maiden tour to India, is looking forward to change the façade of Alliance Francaise, Sector 36, Chandigarh, where he performs today.

He plans to indulge tricity residents with his mesmerising act by the use of a unique instrument called ‘meta- instrument’. Serge revealed more about it when he explained the phenomenal use of his special apparatus. “I make abstract images on buildings. The idea is to artistically highlight a façade of a building; though I don’t depict a story, but feelings,” says the artist. Though the first meta-instrument, which is a digital music instrument, was built in 1989, Serge designed his own in 2003. The instrument features 54 discrete pressure-sensing ‘keys’ or touch points, thumb-sliders and pivoting handgrips, informs Serge, adding that he is already making another one that has better precision.

“I have been performing all over the world for 31 years now. There are only 10 such artists in the world who can perform this type of act,” informs Serge, who has previously performed in Bengaluru, Puducherry and Hyderabad.

Sharing further details about the function of the meta-instrument, Serge says it is used to sense gestures, and is therefore a ‘gestural transducer’ designed to measure and digitise the gestures of a musician. The artist creates his own musical compositions to play along with his act, apart from those by German wizard Sebastian Bach. In the modern world, where classical music is losing its essence, this qualified sound engineer says he developed interest in the art after witnessing a classical music concert when he was in school.

Serge believes that if music is mixed with images, it appeals more to the audience, because then it revolves around you in 360 degrees. One can even create 3D images with the meta-instrument, though it takes lot of time to perform such an act, informs he.

Serge says he would love to perform with an Indian artiste if the opportunity arose, adding, “I don’t think any meta-instrumentalist has ever performed with an Indian artiste.”
Today, Serge would be performing with a local orchestra comprising 12 musicians from Alliance Francaise, Chandigarh. The orchestra, we are told, was trained for only nine hours in two days for a live performance that includes the use of ‘gamepads’.

Stay ready to witness the magic unfold, as you have never seen it before. The show is on at Alliance Francaise, Sector 36, Chandigarh, at 6.30 pm. Entry is free.

OMG! MSG is finally here

For once, Salman bhai must be having sleepless nights, and Shahrukh Khan must already be counting his days in the industry. PK or no PK, Aamir ‘sincere’ Khan would probably be the only Khan of the troika who would somehow find a way to remain in the industry despite this tsunami. Even Rajinikanth must be mulling retirement after all.Writes Aarish Chhabra
