Punjab governor Shivraj Patil has hailed Punjab as one of the best states in the country to bring down the infant mortality rate (IMR). In his message on the eve of Republic day here on Saturday, Patil praised the state's 'nanhi chhaan' project for the welfare of the girl child.
"Punjab, the country's food bowl, has also made a marvelous improvement in bringing down its maternal mortality rate (MMR)," Patil said.
Terming female foeticide as an illegal and criminal practice that posed a serious threat to society, he praised the 'nanhi chhaan' campaign in the state that aimed to save the girl child and promoting environment protection by planting a sapling to celebrate the birth of girl child.
"The unprecedented contribution of Punjab to the cause of freedom of the country is unmatched anywhere in the history of the world. The great martyrs, who shed their blood and languished in jails, have left a rich legacy for us that demands love and respect of our motherland besides commitment to preserve India's glory," he said.
He also extended greetings to the armed forces personnel guarding the frontiers.
