Bimla Devi, 38, the woman of the house, appeared too shocked to speak, and her son talked in monosyllables. The loss is irreparable and wounds lasting. "No amount of money can restore our honour," said Raj Kumar, the elder brother of Bimla's husband Krishan.
The Dalit family's sole breadwinner, daily-wage labourer Krishan killed himself on September 18, nine days after his daughter was gangraped. An agitation later, two accused have been arrested. But the family is still in a state of numbing pain, huddled together in silence in its modest two-room house.
So far, the administration has announced help of Rs. 5 lakh, besides a job for the rape victim's brother, 19-year-old Gaurav. A student of the nearby Industrial Training Institute (ITI), he said he had heard about the job, "but nothing else (has been done) so far (in that regard)".
Deputy commissioner Dr Amit Aggarwal reiterated, though, "The victim will get free treatment, councelling, education and all other aid. We are recommending the case of her brother for a government job." Political leader are also keen on meeting the family. Haryana BSP president Naresh Saran and state unit in-charge Rajbir Singh would visit the village on Wednesday.
Amid the palpable tension, in light of the fact that the offenders were Jats, village sarpanch Inder Singh Kalirawna said he was trying to normalise the situation. A meeting of the elders was held on Tuesday. "We have requested the villagers to extend co-operation to the police," he said.
Meanwhile, a local court remanded Sunil, the accused arrested on Monday, in police custody for four days. The cops want to interrogate him for whereabouts of the absconding accused. Another accused, identified as Situ, is already in police custody, but there are believed to be 12 rapists in all, one of whom allegedly clicked photographs of the heinous act.
Disgust was apparent in the words of Rajat Kalsan, lawyer of the victim, who said he was dealing with four cases of rape of Dalit women, from Hansi, Siwani, Sadar Hansi and now Dabra: "We need stern action, like rendering the rapists infertile."
