The Sirmour district is leading the state in floriculture, contributing around 51% production of the flowers in the state. In fact, the cultivation of flowers in the district has increased specially in the past two years.

Dr Priyanka Thakur, floriculturist and scientist at the Dhaulakuan regional centre of the University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, claims that out of the total area of 913 hectare under floriculture in the state, as much as 558 hectare is in this district alone. About 3,500 farmers have been engaged in the field of flower production, she added.
While only 25-hectare land was being used for the cultivation of flowers in the state in 2004, this figure increased to 913 hectare by 2013. At Dhalakuan, the floriculture centre was started in 2012 and ever since the production of flowers has been on the increase in the district.

Dr Thakur also claims that the centre has produced 30,000 ornamental plants as well as other flowers for further distribution among farmers.

Assistance is also being provided to farmers from time to time by the scientists of the centre to resolve their problems related to flower production.

In the district, Paonta Sahib valley is leading in flower production.

At present, the centre is promoting  chrysanthemum, marigold, gladiolus, corination and roses etc. Besides, ornamental plants are also being promoted by the centre.

Dr Thakur says, "The centre is aiming to provide self- employment to youths through floriculture so that they can set up their own farm houses.

"It is true that in a short span of time, the district has set an example in the production of flowers across the state. The aim of the centre is being achieved as many people are earning rich dividends in this filed," she added.
