Additional district and sessions judge Deepak Aggarwal on Saturday awarded life in jail to six men for the murder of a Babyal village resident on February 9, 2011.

The court has also imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 each on Jaswinder, Mohit, Jagpreet, Tejinder, Rahul, and Sandeep, while the juvenile court would announce the verdict on two minor accused later.

The prosecution said the eight persons had attacked Surya Partap with sharp-edged weapons while he was going on a motorcycle. The group was first booked under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code, but later the section was replaced by 302 (murder) as he died at a hospital in Chandigarh.

Sources said the jail authorities had anxious moments in the morning when the court held the men guilty in the murder case, and one of them, Jagpreet, escaped from the police custody. Even as the cops were looking for him, Jagpreet reportedly came back to the courtroom when the judge announced the quantum of sentence later in the day.
