A six-year-old girl was raped here on Sunday when she went out to buy candies. The suspect is unidentified.

After the girl was found crying on the railway tracks near the local Maharaja Ranjit Singh Nagar, police received a phone call about it from Nanak Nagri, Des Raj, sub inspector at the city-1 police station here, confirmed. “We reached the spot and took the girl to Dr Mathura Dass Civil Hospital where a team of doctors conducted the medical examination,” said the SI.

The two policemen who responded to the call from Nanak Nagri declined to believe that it was a case of rape, social worker Swaran Singh Ladi alleged. “Prominent citizens even approached senior officials at the city police station but nobody cared to note their complaint,” said Ladi. “It was only when we threatened to approach director general of police Sumedh Singh Saini that SI Des Raj agreed to register the case.”

After the medical examination report, the police raided various places in the city in the hope of finding the culprit. “The victim was in shock, so the police had to wait to register the case,” said SI Des Raj. A first-information report (FIR) under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has now been lodged.
