Solo act theatre performances are gaining popularity if the presence of a sizeable audience at the 7 Wonder Solo Theatre Festival in Punjab Kala Bhavan is anything to go by. According to director Ashish Sharma, probably it is like the Twenty20 format in theatre which appeals better.

Friday’s play ‘Khidki Band Kardo’, written by Girish Bakshi and directed by Ashish Sharma, brought into focus the trauma faced by a divorced woman amid the dictates of male dominance.

Essaying a 45-year-old divorced woman Mala, young actor Pragati Sharma (21) managed to portray the turmoil of a divorcee forced to live with her son in a rented accommodation due to temperamental differences with her husband and his family. Having confined herself to her house, Mala remained cut off from the vicinity. However, one day while adjusting her house, she happens to open the window and gets a response from her immediate neighbor who is a woman. Finding a sympathetic response, Mala shares that all the men she has come across focus more on her physique and appearance which pinches her. Later, in a bid to pay them in the same coin, she offers inviting responses. But soon tired of this, she shuts the window forever.

The play ‘Weekend’ will be staged on Saturday.
