Two artists from Kolkata, Dhiren Sasmal and Subrata Ghosh, bring 38 works of art to Chandigarh at Art Portfolio, Sector 9, for the tricity residents to savour visually. While Dhiren, who has been painting since 1975, uses pen and ink on acrylic using a technique in which art is applied in the background; Subrata prefers the use of acrylic on canvas.

As Dhiren shows a series on horses and adolescence each, in which a unique form of collage has been incorporated, he explains, “Each applied background that I carve has a story to tell. Life of today’s youngsters has become quite mechanical, almost like a robot’s. Their power of imagination has also waned, so, through my works of art, I want to give them a message: to preserve their innocence.”

In Subrata’s works, we spot the use of ample white, apart from shades of yellow and light grey. Talking about his ‘divine compositions’, Subrata shares, “The series is called White, made on the themes of Indian mythology and figurative art.” Through ‘Prasanna’ (showcasing Devi Durga), ‘Bani’ (Devi Saraswati) and ‘Bhuvanpati’ (Lord Ganesha), there is indeed a sense of divinity that seeps from the works.

The exhibition is on till March 10, with paintings ranging between R 8,000-R 1.5 lakh.
