SFS submitted a memorandum for reconstitution of fee committee claiming that the committee, constituted for the purpose, included only students’ council president as the representative of the students. SOPU even threatened that the party would not let the university function, if PU decided to hike fees.

SFS president Arishdeep Singh said when protest had been staged by the students last month, it had been promised that all student organisations would be given representation in fee committee from next time.

“The fee committee should be reconstituted so that it can represent larger interests of the students,”Singh said adding that PU’s step would lead to privatisation of education and resultantly would deprive a majority of mass e s from education.

SOPU, on the other hand, held a protest outside the PU vice-chancellor’s office where the meeting was taking place.

“Our stand is clear on the issue. We will oppose any move of fee hike by the university management,” Amninder Singh, SOPU president said.

SOPU claimed that PU V-C AK Grover had acted like ‘a dictator’ and constituted the committee without giving any representation to the student organisations.

“It was decided earlier that in case any committee regarding fee hike is to be constituted, all student organisations will be given representation in that committee. Education should reach all the underprivileged sections of the country,” he said and warned that if university went ahead with fee hike, SOPU would not let PU function.
