As Panjab University Student Council (PUCSC) polls near, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will take a decision on allowing its student wing, Chhatra Yuva Sangarsh Samiti (CYSS), to participate in the elections in a week.

The decision was taken at a meeting held between student leaders, AAP's national executive member Gul Panag and party leaders Rajeev Godara and Manjit Singh at the PU Students' Centre to take stock of the student wing's preparedness before student polls.

Student leaders are learnt to have complained to Panag that while the party had an enrolment of nearly 250 members at the time of general elections, many leaders of the party, including Panag, neglected the student wing, as a result of which it is no longer functional.

“Student polls are less than a month away. Even if we start now, it is very difficult to give a respectable fight. After the general elections nobody remained in touch, including Gul Panag,” a leader commented.

Talking about the meeting, a CYSS leader, Amandeep Jawandha, said:“The decision to contest student polls has yet to be cleared by the party's top leadership. It will be taken within one week.”

He said an ad hoc committee comprising senior student activists will take stock of the student body's preparedness and apprise the party leadership.

“We will give our report to the party leadership, who will decide whether to participate in elections or not,” he said adding that if CYSS decides to contest the polls it would strictly adhere to the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations on student elections.

If the CYSS, chooses not to contest the polls, it would act as a watchdog, said Jawandha

“If other parties are found flouting rules, CYSS will protest against them and even move the court to ensure the elections are free and fair,” he said.
