The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is set to re-elect Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal as the party president for a second consecutive term in Amritsar on September 3.

The SAD would hold a congregation at the Teja Singh Samundari Hall, where 445 elected party delegates would participate in the presidential election, SAD secretary Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said here.

So far, there has not been any voice of dissent within the SAD to replace Sukhbir, who succeeded his father, chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, as the party president in January 2008.

Apart from Punjab, a few delegates would come from Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

UT to shift complainants to another destitute home

With an aim to thwart any pressure on the inmates of Bal Niketan - a home for orphan girls in Sector 15 - on whose complaint an FIR was lodged against 50-year-old supervisor of the home for sexually harassing them, the UT social welfare department has decided to shift the complainants to another government-run destitute home.
