A tea vendor was allegedly thrashed by policemen in custody after he was picked up during an anti-encroachment drive here on Wednesday evening.

The 45-year-old vendor, Vijay Kumar, who suffered severe injuries in his stomach and chest, has also claimed that the cops forcibly got him to sign a document that said his injuries were not an outcome of thrashing by police.

Kumar's family and fellow vendors staged protest at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32, where he is admitted. A native of Uttar Pradesh, Kumar stays in Hallomajra and has been putting up his stall in Industrial Area for four years.

The matter began during an anti-encroachment drive of the municipal corporation outside Elante Mall in Industrial Area. MC enforcement wing sub-inspector Bhupinder Kaur said, "We called the police when the vendor resisted giving his utensils. After that, we left the spot."

Kumar said he was taken in custody by the police around 4pm, and thrashed by three cops at the Industrial Area police station before being finally released around 8pm. He identified one of them as "constable Vikram" who allegedly hit him with the butt of a rifle, rendering him unconscious. His wife later got him out and admitted to the GMCH.

After holding protest, vendors led by Chandigarh Congress's colony cell president Shashi Shankar Tewari filed a complaint against the cops. Deputy superintendent of police (DSP), east, Anjitha Chepyala said, "The statement of the vendor is being recorded, and an inquiry has been initiated. Action will be taken if anyone is found guilty."
