Kahan Singh Pannu, director general, school education, said zero tolerance would be shown towards the drunken or intoxicated teachers on the school premises.

"We are sensitising the erring teachers that strict action will be taken against them. The teachers will be chargesheeted and further dismissed in such cases," he added.
He added that such cases were found not only in village schools, but also in border and city area schools.

"Teachers play an important role in nation building and considered as spiritual guides for students. A few cases have been found where teachers don't even shy away from consuming drugs in front of the students, which affects the moral fibre of the students," Pannu added.

The department has asked people, school authorities and students to inform the authorities concerned the moment they find a teacher consuming drugs or alcohol on the school premises by mailing to dgsepunjab18@gmail.com or calling at 0172-2624673. They can also send a fax on 0172-2624687.

The students, parents or the school authorities can also inform the district education officers in this regard.

Pannu said, "The suspected teachers would undergo medical examination so that the consumption of any drug can be ascertained or a written statement will be taken from the teacher that they have consumed drugs or alcohol."

The schools heads have also been asked to take strict action against such teachers or other workers found guilty. They should conduct an inquiry against them and inform the department.
