Amongst a host of films that won the National Award in various categories, the name of 2012 film Vicky Donor rings in sweet notes for tricity residents, since three of its actors —Dolly Ahluwalia, Yami Gautam and Ayushmann Khurrana — belong to Chandigarh.

Not only has the film won the ‘popular film for wholsesome entertainment award’, actor-designer Dolly has bagged the ‘best supporting actress’ trophy as well. Proud and happy for the film’s success, the three talk with HT City about being a part of the Delhi-based drama.

Despite this being Dolly’s second stint at winning a National Award (she first won it in 1999 for costume designing for the film Bandit Queen), the actor says she felt like ‘yelling with excitement’ when she first received the news from the film’s director, Shoojit Sircar. “I was at the Delhi Airport when Shoojit called me to give me the good news. My first reaction was going blank, after which I wanted to shout out my excitement,” she laughs.

In Vicky Donor, Dolly plays a loving mother to Ayushmann Khurrana, a widow who enjoys a Patiala peg every evening with her mother-in-law and yet doesn’t deter from performing her duties as the bread earner.

“I feel blessed that the jury and the public accepted me and loved my character in the film. This role has given me a lot of recognition. When I walk on the streets, people from all age groups come and shower compliments. The best was from a youngster who said he wanted a mother like me. For that matter, daughters-in-law and their mothers-in-law have told me that my role re-defined their relationship,” Dolly smiles.

On a quirky note, she adds, “Of course, the men jokingly ask if I would accompany them for a Patiala peg.”

Dolly dedicates the award to the technical crew and team of Vicky Donor, saying they worked as a family unit.

‘Vicky’ and ‘Ashima’ are over the moon

City heartthrob Ayushmann Khurrana says about Vicky Donor’s victory: “It’s a great feeling to be a part of an incredible and quirky script like Vicky Donor. It wasn’t a stereotype documentary of sperm donation; instead it was fun-filled and carried a social message.

I feel I did my job as the male lead pretty well, but I won’t take others’ credit away. In fact, I think every character of the film made valuable additions in his or her own way.” Ayushmann now gears up for his April 12 release, Nautanki Saala.

The pretty female lead, Yami Gautam is expectedly overwhelmed at the film’s victory. Says she, “Vicky Donor is the result of excellent teamwork by the producer of the film, John Abraham, along with other actors, technicians and crew members. I am also grateful to our director Shoojit Sircar, to whom I owe my success.”

Yami is currently shooting in London for Neeraj Pandey’s upcoming film, Aman Ki Aasha, in which she stars with Ali Zafar.
