Stunned over party’s embarrassing defeat in Himachal Pradesh in all the four seats, Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee has decided to take some ‘tough’ decisions.

Pradesh Congress chief Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has sought feedback from party’s block and district units on its dismal performance in the recently-concluded Lok Sabha elections.

The party is more concerned since its vote share went down by nearly 5% across the state, while it was earlier above 45%.

The Congress went down in 59 assembly segments out of 68 in the state, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to get substantial lead of over 10,000 votes in 14 assembly segments.

The poor performance of the ministers in their respective constituencies has also raised the concern of the party. Sukhu has convened the party meeting of all the district presidents in the state party headquarters ‘Rajiv Bhawan’ here to assess the electoral loss for the party.

“Now, time has come to take some very tough decisions,” Sukhu told HT. The party till had been lenient in implementing the one man one post discipline, now seems to be serious to enforce the same.

The one man one post discipline will be implemented shortly, added he. Those holding dual posts in government and party will be given the option to choose one. The senior leaders in government should opt to serve the party, said he.

“We will strengthen the party at the grassroots level, while new faces will be given preference in the PCC,” said Sukhu. Attributing the defeat to sweeping Modi wave, Sukhu denied that it was a referendum against the Virbhadra’s government.

The prominent leaders holding dual posts include, Harsh Mahajan, Harbhajjan Singh Bhajji, Ram Lal Thakur, Gangu Ram Musafir, Kuldeep Singh Pathania, Subash Mangalate, Baba Hardeep Singh, among others.

There are as many as half a dozen leaders who are holding dual posts. Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh’s most trusted man Harsh Mahajan is party’s vice-president as well as chairman of Himachal Pradesh State Cooperative Bank, while former legislator from Shimla, Harbhajj an Singh Bhajji is party’s general secretary and chairman of Himachal Pradesh water management board.
