For better interaction with patients, the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here has decided to impart Hindi and Punjabi lessons to doctors, most of whom belong to regions where these two languages are not spoken widely.

Around 300 resident doctors who join from this session, which begins coming Tuesday, are covered, as per a decision by the PGIMER administration. Sources said the lessons in Punjabi and Hindi will focus on communication about basic symptoms of diseases and common terminology. Majority of resident doctors at the institute are from the North-East and South India, while patients are mostly from Hindi- or Punjabi-speaking areas.

A senior PGIMER official said that the institute had tied up with a teacher from the Punjabi department of Panjab University, while for Hindi language lessons the institute would make use of its own Hindi section that has a deputed officer.

Manju Wadwalkar, spokesperson of the institute, said the initiative would hopefully ensure more efficiency in patient care.

On Wednesday, meanwhile, the institute administration also organised a round of the hospital for the new batch of resident doctors.
