After the sanitation workers of Jalandhar heckled local bodies minister Anil Joshi on Monday, deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal called an urgent meeting on Tuesday to discuss the solid-waste management project for the city.

Till the filing of this report, the meeting was still on in Chandigarh. Joshi, mayor Sunil Jyoti, and municipal commissioner Manpreet Singh Chattwal, who were part of the discussion, are reported to have conveyed to the deputy CM that they were going ahead with the project without any changes, even though the sanitation workers were unhappy.

The private company that got the project in January 2012 has failed to execute it because of the dissent of Safai Karamchari Union and leaders of the Valmiki community. Door-todoor collection of garbage and its scientific disposal to produce power was to start in July 2012.

Jindal Company was contracted to collect garbage for minimum rate of Rs. 315 per ton, while the cost in other cities is up to Rs. 1,800 per ton. The treatment plant was to come up at Jamsher village outside Jalandhar.

Positive signs from the meeting will give relief to the company that had incurred heavy financial loss in the past one year, as it has purchased tippers, carts and community bins that are unused since.
