A large number of the tricity’s private dentists don’t know even the basics of dental care waste management. According a recent study published in the Journal of International Society of Preventive and Community Dentistry, a study was conducted on 100 private dental practitioners selected by simple random sampling using a questionnaire.

The study was aimed to assess the awareness and practices of dental care waste management among private dental practitioners in Chandigarh, Panchkula and SAS Nagar.

Among the total respondents, 52% were males and 48% females. The study found that nearly 14% of the dental practitioners were not aware of the different categories of the waste generated in their clinics and 12% were not aware of the colour coding used to dispose the waste.

About 26% of them practised wrong measures t o di s pose shar ps and extracted tooth, respectively. Similarly, a majority 32% of dentists do not dispose outdated and expired medicines properly from their clinics.

The study recommended that though majority of dental practitioners were aware of categories and colour coding used for disposal of different types of wastes yet they do not follow the same in their practice.

“Hence, strict prosecution laws should also be imposed under the Biomedical Waste Management Act for the dentists so that they are implemented in daily practice,” the study recommended.

According to different studies, if dental waste is not disposed of properly it can lead to several health and environmental hazards as dental care waste involves chemical waste, heavy metals such as mercury and lead, disinfectants, sterilising agents and sharps, including needles, scalpels, glass carpules and burs etc.
