Barely a week after a cop was dragged on the car's bonnet by two youngsters, two policemen were thrashed on Monday night after they tried to intercept two motorcycle riders here. The incident occurred late on Monday night when Janmashtami celebrations were on at Ram Darbar in Sector 31.

The injured cops have been identified as sub-inspector Balwinder Singh and head constable Ramesh Chand. Ramesh had got a fracture in his left leg. The accused have been identified as Akash Bakra and Deepak Kumar, who are on the run.

As per the police, the accused were creating a ruckus and were signalled to stop by Balwinder around 11.45 pm. Ramesh was standing at a distance when he saw Balwinder being thrashed.

Ramesh said, "Near Vishwakarma temple, we spotted two youngsters riding a motorcycle without helmets. They were drunk. They were signalled to stop, but they entered into a verbal spat and attacked Balwinder." When Ramesh went to Balwinder's rescue, he too was pushed and his left leg hit a stone lying on the road.

The injured cops were rushed to General Hospital-16 in a police van. Ramesh will undergo a minor surgery for the fracture. Sub-inspector Balwinder was discharged after treatment from the hospital.

Sources said Bakra had been arrested twice in two liquor smuggling cases. A case was registered at Sector 31 police station against the accused, who managed to flee away from the spot.
