It’s students’ poll time in PU and there can never be a dearth of freebies on offer from those in the fray. There have always been rumours that parties and candidates try to woo student voters with trips and functions, in a clandestine manner of course. However, on Friday HT managed to get a picture of students of University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) boarding a bus to Kausali, a free trip arranged by one of the student bodies. Candidates like to keep such events under wraps as the permissible expenditure limit is Rs. 5,000.

When HT questioned one of those boarding the bus on the party sponsoring the trip, he did not say anything, but flashed his phone sporting the sticker Student Organisation of India (SOI). However, when contacted SOI leader Simranjit Singh Dhillon said, “We don’t have the budget to organise trips. SOI has nothing to do with this.”

Later, HT learnt that a fresher party was also arranged for those from the fashion technology department at a private club, again by a students’ body.

“We have no such reports. It is difficult to say which party  arranged the trip,” said Navdeep Goyal, dean, student welfare.
