Some unidentified men set ablaze a Mahindra jeep outside a hostel at Panjab University here on Tuesday.

Youngsters, gathered outside the hostel, soon noticed the jeep, which was parked nearby, in flames and informed its owner Vikramjit Singh, a student of department of chemical engineering and technology, PU, about the incident.

Police sources said, Vikramjeet had complained that two men came on a motorcycle, poured petrol on his jeep and set it afire.

According to Vikramjeet's suspicion, boyfriend of one of his friends could be behind this incident.

Some of the students, sleeping in their rooms, felt the heat and saw a burning car outside their hostel when they looked outside. The police were also sounded immediately by the hostel residents. They also tried to douse the flames but the vehicle was damaged by then. Two fire tenders were also pressed into service.

The police are yet to register a case as they have not got a written complaint in the matter.

The police will check the CCTV footage of the hostel and investigations are on to identify the accused.
