UT admn’s empowerment idea: A job website exclusively for women

The UT administration would soon launch a job portal focusing exclusively on assisting women access job opportunities in the city. The project is being undertaken by the department of social welfare on directions of UT administrator Shivraj Patil, said officials.

The portal, which is currently being designed, would have details of job openings in government and private sectors, both full-time and part-time, besides vacation-specific jobs for students. The service would be available to the aspirants and companies free of cost.

The website would share the database available with the employment exchange for which the department of social welfare has already got the approval. UT director, social welfare, Rajesh Jogpal said, “The portal is being designed and developed with the sole aim of benefitting women by providing them a platform to search for suitable jobs. Those looking for a job, whether they belong to the skilled or unskilled categories, can upload their resume after registering.”

For ensuring safety of aspirants and to ascertain the credentials of employers, police verification of all the companies has been made mandatory, according to officials. Besides, the department would set up a team for matching requirements of the employers with the resumes available on the website for guiding eligible candidates.

The department would also make special arrangements for using the portal at all the eSampark Centres across the city.

Welcoming the move, Dr Pam Rajput, chairperson, union government’s high-level committee on the status of women, said the project, “if implemented properly”, could go a long way in empowering women, especially those from the lower strata of society.

According to Census 2011, Chandigarh is one of the most literate states of northern India with 86% literacy rate oveall, 90 % among males and 81.2 % among females. The work participation rate among males is 56.5%, and 16% among females.
