Shriniwas Vashisht, a 1981-batch IPS officer, was on Tuesday appointed as the Haryana director general of police (DGP). He will replace Ranjiv Singh Dalal, a 1974-batch IPS officer, who retires on Wednesday after remaining at the helm for six years. Dalal has been appointed as director general, Haryana Institute of Public Administration in Gurgaon, for a year.

Vashisht, who turns 57 this November, retires in 2015. He supersedes three 1979-batch IPS officers — Satyendra Kumar and Sharad Kumar, both due for retirement in 2015, and RK Vachher, who retires in 2014.  There are two more IPS officers — Brijinder Rai of the 1974 batch and Rakesh Malikk of the 1976 batch — serving the state who are senior to Vashisht but were not considered for the top post as they retire in November 2012 and January 2013, respectively.

Sharad Kumar, who is posted as the additional director general of police (ADGP), crime, has been taken out of mainstream policing in the interest of hierarchy and posted as DG, vigilance bureau, an assignment being handled by Vashisht at the moment.

RK Vachher, another officer senior to Vashisht, has also been taken off from the assignment of DG, human rights and litigation, and posted as chairman, Haryana Police Housing Corporation.

Like his predecessor RS Dalal, who is from Rohtak, Vashisht is also a Haryana native from Sonepat.
