Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir guided Delhi to an easy six-wicket win over Himachal Pradesh in their North Zone Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy opening match at PCA Stadium on Tuesday.

Both Gambhir and Sehwag looked settled in the middle hitting forties and stitching a match winning opening stand of 82 runs in 11 overs against Himachal.

A vintage Sehwag was on display as he carted hapless Himachal bowlers trying to defend a sub-par total of 134. His 42 of 32 balls, inclusive of five fours and a six over mid-wicket, gave ample signs that the batsman is all set to turn a new leaf. Gambhir added 41 off 40 balls with six fours.

There was a bit of wobble once the duo got out with Delhi losing Mithun Minhas and Unmukt Chand in one over, but Rajat Bhatia and Milind Kumar ensured the team reached its target in 19th over.

Earlier, Himachal struggled at the start of their innings and at one point were reeling at 10 for 2. Paras Dogra, who remained unbeaten on 40, strung series of partnerships with Chopra (24), Gangta (29) and Dhawan (27).

Elsewhere, Haryana managed to defeat Punjab by 32 runs, while Services cantered to a seven-wicket win over Jammu and Kashmir.

Brief scores: HP: 134 for 6 in 20 overs (P Dogra 40no, N Gangta 29, P Chopra 24, R Dhawan 27, I Sharma 2 for 22) V  Delhi: 135 for 4 in 18.2 overs ( G Gambhir 41, V Sehwag 42, B Sharma 2 for 28); Haryana: 136 all out in 19.5 overs (A Barot 27, R Dewan 38, N Saini 23, J Sharma 23, H Singh 2 for 12, H Chawla 3 for 23) v Punjab 104 for 9 in 20 overs (M Vohra 28, M Gony 19, H Patel 3 for 35, J Yadav 3 for 10);
J&K: 91 all out in 18.4 overs (S Beigh 24, V Dogra 16, S Nazar 4 for 13) v Services: 93 for 3 in 16.4 overs (A Gupta 25, R Paliwal 29no, A Nabi 2 for 13).

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) has urged the Himachal government to have a relook at the charge sheet against the previous Bharatiya Janata Party led regime in the state, alleging the inquiry against the latter was not being followed up seriously.
