If you are planning to get the gallbladder removal surgery done at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, you may have to wait for at least six months. The waiting list is getting longer and patients may have to wait for up to one year even for routine surgeries.

As per information obtained from various surgical specialties and super specialties at the PGIMER, it is not easy to get the routine surgeries done as there is a long waiting list. The waiting lists are longer for surgeries of hernia repair, gallbladder removal, cataract and prostate repair. The longest waiting list is for the patients who want to get their prostate repaired. In some cases, the patients have to wait even for one year. Similar is the situation with orthopedics surgeries like knee replacement, where patients have to wait for three to six months.

Even there is a long list for life saving surgeries like open heart bypass surgery, where patients have to wait for at least for two months. The surgery is performed by the department of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery.

Due to overburden, the institute has stopped performing some surgeries on routine basis. It includes surgery for piles.

"What can you do? When you get operation theatre for just two days in a week and on the one side a patient needs life saving cancer surgery and on the other, someone needs surgery for piles, then you fix your priorities," said a senior faculty member from department of surgery, wishing not to be named.

"These are surgeries which can be performed even at a small centre. The PGIMER is a referral centre, here you are in war-like situation, saving lives of people," said an additional professor from one of the surgical branches of the institute.

Significantly, it is happening despite the fact that around 1.55 lakh surgeries were performed at the institute in 2012, including around 34,000 major surgeries.

Manju Wadwalkar, official spokesperson of the institute, said that as far as waiting list is concerned it can be found even in rest of the hospitals in the city as well as region. "But we never refuse a patient despite overburden. "There is waiting list for only planned surgeries, not the emergency cases," she said.
