The Indian Institute of Management-Rohtak (IIM-R) has completed its four years of establishment. Hindustan Times spoke to its director Prof P Rameshan, who has an experience of more than 16 years in IIMs, on the premier institute’s journey, achievements, social commitments and unfulfilled project of constructing its own campus.
HT: How has been the four-year journey?
Rameshan: The institute was established on November 16, 2009, in Rohtak, but I had joined it on November 15, 2010, as its full-time director. Before that, the IIM-Lucknow was handling it. We have tried to develop the IIM-R with a vision of management excellence, strong social commitment and passionate value system. To be ready with solution is our forte, so the journey remained quite successful.
If we talk about achievements, where does the IIM-R stand?
We have achieved over 200% growth in terms of batch size. The strength of students in each batch has risen from 50 to 150. We recently culminated third marathon in our social commitment campaign for the girl child in which legendary athlete Milkha Singh was the chief guest. We have organised two management conclaves. Our Swabhav campaign is bearing the expenses of education of 60 auto drivers’ daughters. We conducted international advisory council workshop in which universities, including Oxford, participated.
Since the IIM-R shares proximity with Maharshi Dayanand University and the University of Health Sciences, why no collaborative projects have been done in the past four years?
The MDU management department has not organised any large-scale event where we could have participated. Besides, we have our own commitments and way of doing things and if something fits in that, we have no problem in considering it.
Sources said no faculty-development or student-exchange programmes have taken place with the two universities. Is there any restriction from your side?
The IIM-R has remained receptive to honour such commitments and I have visited the two universities on several occasions. We have even invited the new MDU vice-chancellor to our campus. Regarding faculty and student-exchange programmes, the IIM-R remains occupied with its prior commitments, which leave little space for such things. The offer has to meet our expectation level.
How much pay packages have the students been offered so far?
The IIM-R’s first batch’s lowest package was more than the lowest salary package offered to the students of the IIM-Ahemdabad in 2010-12. In 2013 batch, our students’ average salary package was Rs. 12.20 lakh, which is highest among all six young IIMs in the country.
Did you have any collaboration with any foreign universities during this period?
We have collaborated with Indiana University, Kelly B-school, California State University at Fullertone, Singapore Management University.
The IIM-R envisioned to have its own campus after three years when it signed an MoU with the MDU to take the premises on lease, but it’s the fourth year of its establishment and nothing seems to be in sight?
Currently we are operating from the infrastructure taken on lease from the MDU. We were given 200 acres at Garnawati village of the district by the state government. But later, some issue cropped up and it took us a while to get land on the periphery of Sunaria village.
There also some issue occurred, but it was resolved amicably. Now, we have got the possession of land and it will take probably six to eight months to get clearance from various government agencies to begin construction. We plan to start our 2015-16 batch in our own campus at Sunaria.
