The Punjab State Election Commission on Thursday postponed the elections for 145 block samitis and 22 zila parishads to May 19, for which a formal notification would be issued on May 3.
Earlier, the polling was scheduled for May 12, and the nomination process was to begin on April 26. But the dates have been changed after considering the arguments of different parties, including the main opposition Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, who pointed out their concerns for clarifications regarding the reserved seats, both for women and Scheduled Caste candidates, state election commissioner SS Brar said in a statement here.
Now, the Commission has fixed May 7 as the last date for filing the nominations, which would be scrutinised the next day, and the last date for withdrawal would be May 9. Votes cast on May 19 would be counted on May 21, when the results would be declared.
Elections to village panchayats would be held around a fortnight later. Brar also stated that the commission was looking into the reported delay in publishing of lists pertaining to the reserved and general category seats in some districts.
