Changing perceptions attract women artistes to Ramlila

With no retake, acting in Ramlila is fascinating women artistes, who earlier used to shy away from taking to the stage. The number of women artistes has gone up to 20 this year. In Chandigarh, Ramlila is performed in different sectors at 60 locations. Over 1,500 artistes take up various characters.

From theatre artistes and college students to call centre employees, women are entering the arena, traditionally a bastion of men. The majority of the women performers feel Ramlila gives them an instant connection with audience and direct feedback on their acting skills.

Mukesh Sharma, director, Garhwal Ramlila Mandal Bijli Board, Sector 28, said, “Fifteen years ago, women were not comfortable with the idea of being a part of Ramlila. We started with three women artistes in 2005.”

Assistant director at Sector 20 Ramlila Ashok Chaudhry said, “Women artistes were not inclined to act as it was not well-accepted. With their coming in, the performance has improved.”
