BJP’s national vicepresident Laxmi Kanta Chawla on Sunday assured the members of the Prajapati community, residing in the old telephone exchange area of the walled city, that she would stand by them and ensure that they are not harassed by the police.
She made this statement after meeting members of this backward class community whose members were targeted by a senior BJP leader of the Amritsar Central assembly segment, as they had sided with the Congress during the Lok Sabha polls. The police had raided the houses of some members of the community on Friday claiming that drugs were being sold in the area.
This had led to protests in parts of the walled city which forced the police personnel to beat a hasty retreat.
Chawla, in a statement, clearly indicated that a leader of the ruling party was responsible for the police raid. She also criticised the police for t he manner in which they went about searching the houses and shops of the community members and did not even spare the children and searched their school bags.
“I will take up this matter at the highest level and, if need be, even meet the chief minister”, she assured the members of the community.
