Protesting against the murder of Punjab Police ASI Ravinder Pal Singh allegedly by ruling Akali Dal general secretary Ranjit Singh Rana, locals, CPI activists and others organised a protest and closed down shops in the Chehhertta area on Friday.
Slamming the state government and police, the protesters who were holding black flags organised a dharna and blocked the Amritsar-Attari road.
Terming the Akali rule as 'goonda raj' in Punjab, the protesters said chief minister Parkash Singh Badal should wake up and see which way his party was heading. They also raised slogans such as 'Sukhbir-Bikram culture murdabad' and 'Sukhbir-Bikram dee fauj murdabad'.
The CPI activists mentioned that the ASI's killing was the murder of law and order in Punjab. They demanded that a case be registered against dismissed Chehhertta SHO Ashwani Kumar for negligence.
Talking to HT, Amarjit Singh Asal, CPI secretary, said: "It seems that everybody had been given the position of general secretary or vice-president in the Shiromani Akali Dal. This needs to be rectified."
Stating that there was a need to weed out tainted workers, Asal maintained that Youth Akali Dal chief Bikram Majithia should also introspect.
