The women police station booked a man for allegedly solemnising his second marriage without divorcing his first wife.

The victim, Surjit Kaur of Manjit Nagar, alleged that her husband, Harjeet Singh of Chhawni Mohalla, deserted her because she did not fulfil his demand for dowry. She also accused her mother-in-law, Jaswant Kaur, of dowry harassment.

Surjit alleged that she married Harjeet on November 8, 2010. Soon after the marriage, Harjeet and his mother started harassing her physically and mentally for dowry.

Tired of the harassment, Surjit started living with her parents. Meanwhile, she came to know that her husband had solemnised marriage with another woman without divorcing her.

A case under sections 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust), 494 (marrying again during lifetime of husband or wife) and 498-A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the IPC has been registered against the accused.

Head constable Gurcharan Singh of women police station, said the accused were at large.
