As a 3-year-old child was crushed to death under a tractor-trolley at Balmiki Nagar here on Monday, residents of the area held a protest against the existence of industrial units in the locality and the industrial units closed their shutters fearing backlash.

The child Kamal was playing in a street at about 10:30 am when he was crushed by a tractor-trolley bearing registration number RNC 5513. The trolley was loaded with metal sheets manufactured in a unit in the area. The police have arrested driver of the tractor-trolley Raj Singh of Bhokhra village and a case under section 304 A of IPC has been registered against him.

As the residents of the locality gathered after the accident, most of the industrial units in the area closed their shutters to avoid any untoward incident. The area has industrial units, manufacturing coolers and related parts and metal sheets.

The residents said they have been repeatedly urging the administration to shift these units from the area, but nothing has been done so far. Shyam Lal, a resident of the locality, said that trucks and tractor-trolleys that enter the narrow streets cause a lot of inconvenience to the people and a child was also injured in a similar accident some time ago.

Meanwhile, commissioner, municipal corporation Bathinda, Dalwinderjit Singh said that the residents might have made such representations in the past and he will look in to the matter what could be done.
