A head constable with the state police, posted with the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA), Patiala, was killed when his service weapon went off accidentally on Wednesday, the police have said.
The deceased has been identified as Navninder Singh Bawa, 45, a resident of Gurbaksh Colony in Patiala.
His son Charanjeev Singh has told the police that they were on their way home on Wednesday night when their car developed some problem and stalled.
“My father got out of the car to open the bonnet and rectified the problem. However, he had removed his service weapon that fired accidentally when he opened the car door,” Charanjeev has told the police.
He added that he approached the nearest hospital, where his father was declared brought dead.
Police station division number 2 in-charge Surinder Singh said prima facie no foul play seemed to be at play as Navninder Singh was known to always carry the service weapon with him.
“Following the statement of the victim’s son, Charanjeev, we have initiated proceedings under Section 174 (unnatural death) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC),” he said.
