City buses fail to generate expenses

The city buses started by the corporation in 2008 to provide the best transport facility to Jalandhar residents have been facing huge losses.
Excluding the amount of diesel, a single bus is running only on a profit of `1,000 from which the contractor has to manage the salaries of the driver and the conductor as well maintenance expenses of the bus.
The contractor also has to pay road tax of around Rs 1 lakh per month for all the buses.
Earlier, all the 15 buses were required to cover the whole city but after a bad response, the corporation has deployed all the buses on the same route from Jalandhar to Kartarpur for providing ten minute local bus service to the people.
As per the agreement, these buses were valid for five years but as no new buses have been purchased, authorities continue to provide local bus service from same buses.
City bus manager of Jalandhar, Parveen, said the corporation should take strict action against three wheelers which cross their permitted limits.
The fare of city buses is almost half as compared to three-wheelers but people prefer to go on three-wheelers.
