The Dussehra festivities organised by the Ramlila Committee, Sector 32, Chandigarh, in association with Traders Welfare Association, Sector 32, saw people turn out in large numbers to celebrate on Thursday.

Before the effigies went up in flames, those present pledged to ‘save the girl child’ to mark the festival, which was based on the theme ‘Beti Bacchao, Beti Padhao’ this time.

Chief guest MP Kirron Kher, home secretary Anurag Aggarwal and local councillor Heera Negi were present during the event. Petals were also showered from a glider. A 200-feet LCD screen was also set up for live telecast of the proceedings.

A special team from Agra entertained with various forms of fireworks. Meanwhile, a ‘nukkad natak’ was also performed by the Ramlila committee and Chandigarh Rang Manch artistes on the theme ‘Beti Bacchao, Beti Padhao’.

On the completion of 52 years of Ramlila Committee, Sector 27, a special team from Mathura, performed Ramlila this time. Mayor Poonam Sharma, who was the chief guest here, used remote control button to put all three effigies on fire.

Like every year, as an attraction for onlookers, the committee had also arranged a helicopter, which was used for distributing posters.

Neeta, a Sector 42 resident who came to Sector 32 market to witness the celebrations, said, “It was nice to witness informative skits this year as children were encouraged to understand the relevance of gender equality, while enjoying the festivities.”
