The crime investigation agency (CIA) of commissionerate police claims to have busted a robbers' gang on Monday after arresting eight members.
The arrested accused have been identified as Mohammad Ali of Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Nagar, Honey of Nakodar, Jaswinder Singh of Pasrampur, Kirpal Singh of Nurpur colony, Varinder Kumar of Sunder Nagar, Sunny of Hargobind Nagar, Ravi and Varinder (brothers) of Nurpur colony.
Police said Mohammad Ali was the kingpin of the gang and the members were planning to strike the city as police force was busy with security arrangements for Sodal Mela.
Acting on a tip-off, a team led by assistant commissioner of police (crime) Harjinder Singh and CIA's staff inspector Inderjit Singh, raided an undisclosed place and nabbed the members, recovering six sharp-edged weapons from them.
Police have also recovered an air conditioner, a laptop, washing machine, juicer, two LCDs, five gas cylinders, two DVD players, a colour TV, four mobile phones, two gold rings, one Tata Ace and one Zen car. The gang members confessed to committing many robberies.
Police said kingpin Ali was a resident of Malerkotla in Sangrur district and faced 14 criminal cases at various police stations and is a proclaimed offender in one of these cases.
