punjab Updated: Jul 15, 2014 22:05 IST

The city police stations will get a facelift as the beautification work on it kicked off on Tuesday. Last week, the Punjab government had granted funds to the police department in this regard.

The police have been concentrating on facilities such as cold water and seating arrangement at police stations for visitors.

The whitewash work at all police stations of the city has been initiated. The contractors that have been carrying out repair work and whitewash have been asked to submit bills with police department for payment.

Police commissioner Pramod Ban said the city police had got handsome fund for repair and beautification of the police stations. All station house officers had been asked to initiate repair work.

He said some of the police stations that had been operating in old buildings had also demanded immediate repair. The police commissionerate had sent the proposal to the head office of the police department, which had had then approved and allocated fund for the same.

According to sources, some of the police stations in the city are in shoddy condition. Walls are sloppy and bearing cracks. The officials at such police stations used to find it difficult to keep the files safe in the building as the roofs of police stations leak in rain. The newly-built police station too needed a facelift, sources said.

Police stations which have sufficient space have been asked to beautify buildings by planting trees.
Inspector Randhir Singh, station house officer at the Basti Jodhewal police station, said repair and whitewash work had been initiated. The police station would make arrangement of fresh water and seating arrangement for visitors.
