As the state government has failed to make efforts to clean up the Sutlej river, the students of nine schools of the city have come together under community level social project 'Swachh bharat, swachh nadiya, swachh samunder' to clean up Sutlej river waters at Sutlej Bridge near Phillaur on Friday.
The project is under the International Coastal Cleanup, Ocean Conservancy, Washington DC. Thes nine city schools are BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar; GMT International School, Bal Bharati Public School, Spring Dale Public School, GNIPS, Drishti Public School, Kundan Vidya Mandir, BCM Basant City and BCM School, Dugri.
Students raised slogans like "You can make a difference and take action, Make up splash, clean up trash, a humble request to all "Save Ganga", Swachh Nadiya, Swachh Samunder' and clean the banks of the river by picking up the plastic, garbage, idols in their bags.
Students cover their mouth with mask and hands with gloves and checked the type of trash seen on the banks of the river and filled the data cards. The report will be used for further action on the cleanup project. The young enthusiastic students were also seen exhorting the passersby to not to pollute the river waters by throwing garbage in it.
RBS Roots, a registered NGO working in the field of saving environment is also collaborating in the programme. Besides, picking up garbage and cleaning, the students participated in poster display, slogan writing and face painting activities also. Placards disseminating information on clean water were also displayed at the venue.
