City’s shuttler Pranaav Jerry Chopra will represent India in the Commonwealth Games being held in Scotland. A product of Ludhiana Badminton Academy (LBA), Chopra will participate in men’s doubles category along with Akshay Dewalkar.
They are the only doubles combination from India to qualify for the games and are currently the national champions in doubles.
At the domestic badminton circuit, Chopra and Dewalkar came into limelight when they defeated Roopesh and Sanave Thomas (seven-time national champions) in the men’s double finals of Tata Open International Tournament in 2011.
They have also won silver medals at the Swiss Open, bronze at Bulgaria International Tournament 2011 and gold at Fajr Senior International Challenge Cup, in Tehran, Iran.
Chopra has been representing India since 2007 in various junior and sub-junior categories, and has been a permanent member of Indian men’s team for the past three years. Chopra, who was the highest paid player from India at US$ 36,000 in the first edition of ‘Indian Badminton League’, now holds the world rank 40 as per the World Badminton Federation.
Before leaving for Scotland, Pranav expressed his gratitude towards his coach, Pullela Gopichand, while saying, “10houre practice sessions daily under the able guidance of Gopichand sir has borne fruit today. I dedicate all my success to him and my parents.”
Other shuttlers from India participating in the games are Srekanth, Kashyap, Guru Sai Dutt in men’s category and Jawala Gupta, PV Sindhu, Thulashi and Ashwani Ponnapa in women’s category. Saina Nehwal has opted out of the games due to injury.
