Taking action against an illegal construction, the municipal corporation (MC) demolished a newly-constructed chowpatty near Cheema Chowk here on Monday.

Following a complaint by city-based RTI activist Rohit Sabharwal, the MC staff demolished all stalls constructed at the chowpatty. The owner of the stalls was planning rent them for commercial purpose.

Rajeev Saggar, building inspector, MC Zone B, claimed, “The chowpatty was constructed on an industrial land and no commercial activity can be allowed there.”

According to sources, there are many illegal chowpattis operating without getting a certificate of change of land use. These chowpattis have no parking arrangements, but the MC seems to have turned a blind eye towards them. Assistant town planner (ATP) Kamaljeet Kaur was not available for comments.
