After the announcement of dates for the newly-formed Pathankot municipal corporation and Sujanpur nagar council, aspirant from both major parties — the Congress and the SAD-BJP combine — have been making their all out effort to get a ticket, with both the major parties set the ball rolling to finalise candidates for the civic polls.

After being elevated to the status of municipal corporation (MC) and addition of new wards, the MC will see candidates from various political parties and Independents into the fray for the 50 seats, while one out of them will get the prestigious chair of the Pathankot mayor for the first time. Earlier, the Pathankot nagar council had a Congress president.

However, the poll heat is also on in Sujanpur, where the incumbent BJP will be fighting hard to retain the post of president.

The BJP, which has asked for papers from the party aspirants three days back, has received more than 100 applications thus far. Members of the Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha, the youth wing of the BJP, have been assigned with the task of collecting applications from the aspirants.

However, the Congress will start collecting application forms on Sunday for both Pathankot and Sujanpur, which will be scrutinised by a team of senior Congress leaders.

“We have received more than hundred applications and the process is still on,” senior BJP leader Rakesh Gupta Lattu told Hindustan Times.

“More and more aspirants are applying for a party ticket, which is a good sign and reflects their confidence into the party,” he added, when asked if it would split the vote bank.

“As the wave is in favour of the BJP, it has boosted the morale of party workers and the aspirants,” he concluded.
Congress district president Anil Vij said the procedure of accepting applications from aspirants would start from Sunday both in Pathankot and Sujanpur.

He said a huge number of aspirants were in line to submit forms and after the scrutiny by senior leaders, the party would decide on the ticket distribution.

He said the Congress was sure of winning the mayoral post in Pathankot and president’s post in Sujanpur, if there happened free and fair polls.

Many new faces are expected to join the fray, which will make the contest between the Congress and the SAD-BJP combine intense.
